Can't really give any helpful advice here, cause when I first started at this level, I didn't have the sense to do this sort of research (asking for advice). Hope I can still do some sharing just for the sake of sharing, Foreigner in Malaysia, so I didn't have access to some offerings that are local only so at the time I started with Stashaway General Portfolio and Stashaway Simple, The biggest mistake and lesson for myself was I was not consistent with my deposits each month. Other than this I've made alot of very risky "investments", Investments in brackets because I know better now that these were more akin to gambling than actually investing. I dabbled in Options, Forex, Copy Trading, Because my monthly contributions were small I was greedy for more returns faster. My biggest loss was Forex Copy Trading on FXTM, It was very profitable for more than a year until one day big losses basically cleared the account, lost RM6000 (this number is a mix of deposits and profit over time). The lesson learnt here was Taking profits is a must, and to better understanding the risks. The quote I like that summarises my experience, "Collecting Pennies in front of a steamroller"
